Enjoy an afternoon of historical film at the Manx Museum at 2pm on Saturday 31st March. Manx National Heritage’s popular archive film afternoon will this year have a sporting flavour to celebrate their current exhibition, ‘Our Sporting Life’.
The film afternoon, appropriately titled ‘Ready, Set Go!’, will include footage drawn from the Museum’s archives, the British Pathe library and the footage gathered from the Manx sporting community. Katie King, curator of the exhibition, said:
“It has been a real pleasure pulling together footage for our ‘Ready, Set, Go!’ film event. Whilst preparing content for the ‘Our Sporting Life’ exhibition I have been lucky enough to meet with many members of the Manx sporting community, and have gathered some fantastic and rare film footage which I am really excited about showing. One of my personal highlights is an old cine film showing the Isle of Man Team’s first ever visit to the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1958.”
‘Ready, Set, Go’ will include vintage tourism footage promoting sporting holidays on the Isle of Man, including a film celebrating the health benefits of Manx cycling; a film celebrating Manx International Cycle week in the 1950s; footage of Manx athletes in action on the world stage; and a diverse range of motorsport footage including some spectacular shots of racing cars at the British Empire Trophy held on the Isle of Man in the 1950s and a film celebrating the Manx scooter rallies.
The free film afternoon runs from 2pm – 3.30pm. Places are limited and participants are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
