The Manx Electricity Authority is stressing the potentially fatal consequences of ignoring danger messages at its electrical substations around the Island.
During the recent half-term holiday, damage was caused to a Substation located within Ballalough housing estate Castletown, by children throwing bricks and stones on the roof and climbing up onto it.
MEA Health & Safety Manager, Andy Cooil said: ‘If the children had fallen through the roof, or a stone or tile had dropped onto the equipment, there could have been a number of outcomes: the person could have been electrocuted and killed; there could have been an explosion; there could have been an extended power outage in the area.’
All MEA substations and buildings containing electrical equipment are marked clearly with yellow ‘Danger of Death’ signs to alert people to hazards.
With the Easter holidays approaching, both the MEA and the police are appealing to parents and young people to take heed of the warnings.
Police Inspector, Mike Musson said: ‘We would encourage parents to speak to their children about the dangers of playing near to and around substations to make sure they know how serious the consequences of damaging one might be. It’s also important for parents to know where their children go when they leave the house.’
