Easter Treats at Cregneash

by isleofman.com 30th March 2012

Easter treats, spring lambs, new arrival piglets, calves and great days out are all part of the offering this Easter holiday at Cregneash.

There’ll be fun on the farm on Saturday 7th April with a horse ploughing match, where teams of men and horses will compete against each other to produce the straightest and best looking plot of furrows on the fields at Cregneash.

On Easter Sunday and Easter Monday horses and tractors will be working together around the village. Some will be ploughing and others will be cultivating the ploughed fields ready for this year’s crops. Vintage tractors and machinery will also be in use in fields around the village.

Easter Monday will also see the second annual Egg Rolling Competition at Cregneash, a local Easter tradition.  Eggs were hard boiled in water with gorse flowers to give them a rich yellow or yellow-brown colour. This year’s competition is free to enter and will be staged on the hill at Cregneash at 2pm, with special prizes awarded for the best decorated and of course the furthest rolling egg!

Whilst at Cregneash, don’t forget to call in to Church Farm to see our new piglets, Loghtan lambs and calves born this Spring.

There’s also face painting, (1pm – 4pm), kids Easter activities at Crebbin’s Cottage and craft demonstrations around the village.

With all sites open from Saturday 31st March 2012, there are a great range of activities planned for the whole family to enjoy this season.

Edmund Southworth, Director of Manx National Heritage said:

“This year, we have a great range of special events taking place at Manx National Heritage sites around the Island starting with Easter at Cregneash.

Alongside site openings and special events, Manx National Heritage is undertaking a number of exciting new developments ranging from launching a complete new website to printing a new free guide to exploring the Isle of Man.  Our shops are stocked with exciting new products, many of which are handmade on the Isle of Man and our shops have been spruced up with a fresh new look”.

Other new developments include new space for activities and learning on the top floor of the House of Manannan funded with the support of the Friends of Manx National Heritage, a new cafe on the ground floor which is set to open in a couple of months time, and a new catering partner at the Niarbyl Cafe, which will open on Easter Saturday, operated by Chris Wilson of Coastline Catering.

Edmund continued:

“Each of these developments is set to further increase Manx National Heritage’s contribution to the Isle of Man economy, which recent independent research found to be in the region of ?30m per annum.  This year, Manx National Heritage has already recruited 50 staff to work at the Island’s heritage sites, providing a significant boost to employment on the Isle of Man.  Further jobs will be created at our cafes and our new purchasing strategy will see further local economic support”.
