by isleofman.com 12th April 2012

Please see the following requests for information:

Between Wednesday 4th April 2012 and Wednesday 11th April 2012, extensive damage has been caused to artificial cricket pitch at Ramsey Grammar School’s west building. Pieces of the pitch have been torn up. The pitch is unplayable and the  cost to  repair it is estimated to be in the region of ?4,000. This crime affects not only Ramsey Grammar School, as this is the home ground for Ramsey Cricket club.

Police are appealing for witnesses that may have seen anything around this area and between the dates stated. Please contact PC Adam Hawkes at Ramsey Police Station on 812234 or telephone 631212 for any information regarding this incident.

Sgt Andy Kneen of Ramsey Police commented

“The school field, and associated tennis and basketball fields are used quite legitimately out of hours by quite a number of people. The area where the damage has been committed is out of view of the road, but can be seen from Ramsey golf course and the school’s west car park. I would ask that anyone who has seen anything suspicious to either contact the Police, or staff at the Grammar School. This crime will impact heavily on the sports life of both the school and Ramsey cricket club.”

At around 5:30pm on Wednesday 11th April 2012 a number of sheep were attacked by two dogs in a field close to Ballavitchell Farm in Crosby. During the incident two lambs were killed outright, four lambs were injured along with three ewes which all received multiple deep wounds to the face, mouth and jaw areas. Two of the ewes affected are heavily in lamb and there is concern for the unborn lambs they are carrying.

The dogs witnessed attacking the sheep are described as follows –

1.    An all white dog with the overall shape of a Staffy type described as having a flabby belly
2.    A dog similar in appearance to a greyhound with fairly long dark brown hair

Following the attack the dogs ran off downhill towards the Peel Road. The fields are only a short distance above the section of the Peel Road near to the Highlander Inn and former Wagon and Horses pub.

PC Ian Scott is investigating the incident and states “I would ask anyone who may have information as to the identity of these dogs or their owner to contact me. At this time the affected livestock are receiving veterinary attention but such is the extent of some of the injuries they may yet prove fatal to the affected animals. Despite regular publicity regarding dog owners needing to take responsibility for their animals, particularly around lambing time, incidents such as this still occur on the Island each year. Farmers are perfectly within their rights to shoot dead any dog straying onto their lands worrying livestock“
