The Horse and Plough has won the Heron and Brearley Carlsberg Pub Cup five-a-side tournament.
50 teams signed up for the tournament, which was sponsored in the UK by Carlsberg and supported locally by Heron and Brearley. The final saw The Horse and Plough’s team two beat The British 12-2.
All 43 of Heron and Brearley’s managed houses were represented in the inter-pub knockout tournament that kicked off at King William’s College in January and attracted teams drawn together by the pub or from the Island’s finance and business sectors.
In addition to organising and meeting the costs of the competition Heron and Brearley donated ?400 - ?1 for every player - to Project21, the Douglas purpose-built recreational facility and Manx-registered charity for people with learning difficulties.
The money was presented to the charity’s Elan Karran at the post-final reception in The Union, Castletown, the venue for the weekly post-match gatherings, by Heron and Brearley retail director Steven Taylor who also presented the tournament prizes. Best Goal went to Nick Bowden (The Prospect), Player of the Tournament to John Myers from The Horse and Plough team two and the award for the winning pub, The Horse and Plough, was presented to team manager Chris Slipper.
Heron and Brearley’s marketing and events manager Cosmo Currey said: ‘The tournament’s been a fantastic success and attracted a good number of supporters as well every week. We’re very grateful to King William’s College, to the team at The Union for providing post-match hospitality with a complimentary Carlsberg every week, and to Gerry Thomson who refereed every match of the tournament.
‘The Heron and Brearley pub cup challenge is set to become an annual event and we’re already outlining plans for next year when it will be open to women as well as men, so we’re expecting even greater numbers.’
The teams from The Horse and Plough and The British will now receive free travel and accommodation to the UK sponsored by Carlsberg to compete in the regional finals in Liverpool later this month, after which the grand final will take place in the Emirates Stadium on May 19, 2012.
The 2013 pub cup will be open to male and female players aged 18 years and over. To register your interest for the 2013 season contact Cosmo Currey, cosmo.currey@heronandbrearley.com, 472806 or 384654, or Helen Simpson, helen.simpson@heronandbrearley.com, 463291.
