Isle of Man Archery Club Report

by isleofman.com 17th April 2012

This weeks 70 and 50 metre round is part of the scratch league and also a qualifying round for the end of year Olympic Challenge, this year a change from the world governing body Fita has changed the compound round from 70 meters on a 122cm target face to  50 meters on a 80cm target face which meant that there would be a lot of personal bests this week.

The first target round of the new outdoor season got away under lovely Manx sunshine although with a frost on the ground and the nip in the air would affect limbs on all the bows at the start and scores were low.  However, by the mid stage the sun was starting to heat things up and making the scores rise.

In the gents compound this was the first time everyone had competed this round at this distance so everyone got personal bests.   Peter Mumford topped the podium with a surprised Frank Vaughan picking up the runners up spot and the big fight for the last spot on the podium was between Colin Moore and Billy Lightfoot.  Their scores were level all-day and at the end they finished level on points but Moore edged it on count back with more gold hit.

In the ladies compound as in the men’s this was also the first time at this distance and the new Isle of Man Bank Sports Woman of the Year Aalin George showed her intent and put in a fantastic shoot to notch up another Island Record and top the podium.  Her sister Kirsten wasn’t to be out-shadowed and picked up the runners up spot closely followed by Sarah Rigby.

Only one gent competing in the recurve this week, Dave Moore, who put in a fantastic shoot this being his first outdoor target round.  In the ladies recurve a welcome return from Anne Rutland after a four and a half month sabbatical showed that she hadn’t last any of her magic, although no personal best.  She topped the podium with Barbara Harris picking up the runners up spot.  Rutland said that the time off had made her finger too soft and they were a bit on the sore side.

In the junior recurve Adam Wright topped the podium with a dominant display of archery, he was followed by new to outdoor archery Rhys Moore.  Moore found it difficult to start but found his feet and picked up the runners up spot and a personal best with Bradley Layton picking up the last spot on the podium.
