An exhibition will open in Port Erin on Thursday (April 19) to highlight plans to revitalise areas in the south west of the Island.
Information boards will be on public display at Port Erin railway station for the next two weeks to provide an update on projects currently being progressed as part of the IoM Town and Village Regeneration Scheme.
Particular attention will focus on the area around the railway station plaza which is earmarked for a new public transport hub and community area. The scheme, to be undertaken in conjunction with the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure, features the development of modern toilet facilities and an improved entrance to the railway museum. There are also plans to move the bus station from Bridson Street to Station Road.
Elsewhere, a range of improvements including new paving, street furniture, signage and lighting has been proposed in order to increase the attractiveness of other prominent locations in Port Erin and Port St Mary.
The south west is one of seven areas set to benefit as part of an Island-wide makeover aimed at boosting local economies and breathing fresh life into our high streets.
The initial phase of work in Port Erin includes Station Road/Church Road, Shoprite car park and the lower promenade, in addition to the railway station plaza. In Port St Mary, improvements are planned for Bay View Road and the Heritage Trail.
The proposals have been drawn up following public consultation by the South West Regeneration Committee, which is a partnership between Government, local authorities and businesses.
Committee Chairman Phil Gawne MHK said: ‘The exhibition will provide an opportunity for members of the public to view detailed designs for the railway station plaza. We want the south west of the Island to achieve its full potential and become an even more attractive place for both local residents and visitors. We believe these proposals are an important first step towards fulfilling those ambitions and would welcome any feedback from members of the community.’
