Ramsey town centre set for significant makeover

by isleofman.com 20th April 2012

The next phase in the regeneration of Ramsey town centre is set to get under way at the end of April, with the area around the Courthouse earmarked for a significant makeover.

Work will involve the widening of pavements, replacement of all hard surfaces with natural stone materials, and the introduction of new lighting, pedestrian signage and street furniture.

Traffic management measures will be implemented to limit disruption to through traffic and allow continued pedestrian access to the area.

Work will start on the Parliament Street section of the scheme and will progress in a number of distinct stages until May 2013.

The aim is to create an attractive new focal point for the town centre as part of the overall vision to enhance the commercial heart of Ramsey.

This latest phase of development follows work to upgrade the pedestrian links between the quayside and main shopping area.

Those initial improvements to The Lanes also helped to showcase a range of construction materials, lighting and public art that will feature in future projects.

Funding for the Courthouse project has been provided by the Town and Village Regeneration Scheme, an Island-wide initiative aimed at boosting local economies and breathing fresh life into our high streets.

Chairman of the Ramsey Regeneration Committee, Allan Bell MHK, said: ‘We believe these latest proposals will transform the area around the Courthouse and create a smarter, vibrant feel to the town centre. It will also support private sector investment in Parliament Street, East Street, the new hotel, the bowling alley and many other projects.’

He added: ‘The people and businesses of Ramsey have embraced the aims of the regeneration scheme which demonstrates a positive commitment to the improvement of the town. By continuing to work together we hope to make the main shopping area even more appealing for both residents and visitors alike.’
