The Manx Classic, the three day sprint and hillclimb event for classic and modern sports cars, gets underway today (Thursday 26th April) with the Governor’s Sprint from the TT Grandstand in Douglas at 12 noon to 3pm and then again from 6pm to 9.30pm.
The three day event continues at the Sloc, north of Port Erin, on Friday, where the Lieutenant Governor Adam Wood will flag-off the first car from the start line. The final event takes place outside Ramsey on Saturday.
Eighty competitors, in a great selection of vintage, classic and modern sports cars ranging from 1921 to 2012, will compete for the “fastest time of day” class honours at each of the three venues.
Cars from the 1920s and 1930s, including rarities such as a 1923 GN Spider, a 1928 4? litre Bentley, a Riley, a Lea Francis, a Bugatti , and a couple of Austin Sevens, will join the ever-popular Ford Escorts and Minis, a good number of Caterhams and many more mouthwatering sports cars at the event.
The cars can be viewed at the Grandstand today, from 12 noon to 3pm and then again from 6pm to 9.30pm, and at various vantage points around all three courses over the next three days.
The Manx Musuem’s new display, Manx Motorsport, explores the history motorcar racing on the Island from 1904 to today, with a focus on the Gordon Bennett Eliminating Trials, the Car TT, the Mannin Beg and Mannin Mooar Races, the British Empire Trophy and the Manx Classic. Part of the popular “Our Sporting Life” exhibition, the new section is launched to coincide with the Manx Classic event, and can be viewed at the Manx Museum from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
