Developing links with local business and working in partnership with the private and public sectors to secure a sound future for Douglas were key themes highlighted by Douglas Mayor Councillor Ritchie McNicholl at the annual business reception held at Douglas town hall.
Welcoming his guests the Mayor said the practice of holding a business reception had begun in 1997 with the express purpose of forging strong links with local businesses. He went on to say that despite the current ‘hostile’ financial climate it was vital investment continued in Douglas to generate positive change and avoid stagnation. Improving the town centre was key to attracting inbound investment and, to this end, the Council together with government were demonstrating their commitment and confidence in Douglas’s future through support of the regeneration scheme which had already served to transform sections of Nelson Street and Wellington Street with further phases soon to begin. Additionally the Council was taking the lead in the redevelopment of the former Cambrian Place site to create a new public library and multi-storey car park in conjunction with a private contractor.
He continued: ‘I think everyone will recognise that the [regeneration] scheme will ultimately benefit everyone by improving the environment of the town centre. Visitors and shoppers will see a tremendous improvement and be more inclined to spend time in the town, which will, in turn, help local businesses.’
In closing he thanked the Mayor of Ballymoney, Councillor Ian Stevenson, for attending and said he hoped links between the two twinned authorities would continue to flourish.
