Social Affairs Policy Review Committee calls for evidence on Pre-School Education

by isleofman.com 30th April 2012

The Social Affairs Policy Review Committee, a Standing Committee of Tynwald, has decided to investigate the Department of Education and Children’s policy on pre-school education following a referral from ten Members of Tynwald.

In a letter to Mrs Brenda Cannell MHK, who chairs the Committee, the Members ask the Committee to consider if the Department’s new policy is value for money and also if it meets educational needs.

The Social Affairs Policy Review Committee now invites the public to submit any information or comments relevant to this investigation. Submissions should be sent to the Clerk of the Committee by 5pm on Thursday 31st May 2012. It will be assumed that respondents are content for their submissions to be published unless otherwise indicated.

Meanwhile, as has already been announced, the Committee intends to take evidence in public from the Minister for Education and Children and officers of the Department at 10.30am on Wednesday 2nd May 2012. This is a scheduled evidence session and will cover a range of topics within the Department’s responsibilities, not just pre-school education.

The Members who have asked the Committee to look into pre-school education are Mr Graham Cregeen MHK, Mr Alf Cannan MHK, Mr Geoff Corkish MHK, Mr Leonard Singer MHK, Mr Dudley Butt MLC, Mr Zac Hall MHK, Mr Bill Henderson MHK, Mr John Houghton MHK, Mr Howard Quayle MHK, and Mr David Quirk MHK.

The other Members of the Social Affairs Policy Review Committee are the Hon Steve Rodan SHK and Mr Juan Turner MLC. As Mr Turner has been appointed a Member of the Department of Education, he will take no part in the Committee’s scrutiny of that Department.
