Last chance to enter Manx Telecom Parish Walk

by isleofman.com 9th May 2012

Entrants only have until midnight on Sunday May 13 to sign up for this year’s Manx Telecom Parish Walk. So far 1,437* walkers have entered the event and organisers are urging anyone who has yet to register to do so as soon as possible. All entries must be made online at www.parishwalk.com and there are no opportunities to sign up for the event once the deadline has passed. Everyone must enter as individuals, including those taking part in the team and Corporate Challenge events.

Manx Telecom Parish Walk Race Director Ray Cox said:

“There are usually a flood of entries in the last few days before the final deadline, but I would urge everyone who wants to take part not to leave it until the last minute. The Manx Telecom Parish Walk is such a great event that it would be a shame for anyone to miss out because they left it too late.”

The Manx Telecom Corporate Challenge category is for teams of four and all team members must be bona fide employees of the same company, and no team can have more than one member who has previously completed the full 85-mile Parish Walk. Winners of the Corporate Challenge will each receive a Sony Ericsson Xperia Active smartphone from Manx Telecom. The winners will be the team which clocks up the highest combined total mileage for the four team members. In the event of a tie in mileage, the total time for all four team members will be used to decide the winner.

There will also be an overall team competition with the rule that no more than two of the four team members have previously finished the full Parish Walk course. All participants - including those for the team and Corporate Challenge events - must enter individually. To enter the team events, entrants simply put the name of their team or Corporate Challenge team on the online entry form. Those who have already entered can go back to their online entry and add in the name of their team or Corporate Challenge team.

For the first time in the Parish Walk’s long-history live tracking devices will be introduced this year thanks to technology provided by Manx Telecom. This will allow anyone to go online and follow the progress of the leading competitors in this year’s race. Twelve elite walkers will be offered the opportunity to carry the devices which will transmit GPS information to the official Manx Telecom Parish Walk website showing a map of the course with a real time display indicating the location of each competitor.

This year’s event will be the first to be sponsored by Manx Telecom which has agreed to sponsor the Island’s biggest mass participation sports event until 2014. The company has provided timing and results services to the Parish Walk since 2007 and these services will continue this year. As in recent years every entrant in the walk this year will carry a timing chip which will automatically update the results website with their position and time when they register at each of the check-in points around the course.

The Manx Telecom Parish Walk starts at the NSC at 8am on Saturday June 23. For all event details go to the official website at www.parishwalk.com.
