Constabulary gains Investors In People Gold Award

by isleofman.com 14th May 2012

The Isle of Man Constabulary is delighted to announce that following an assessment in March this year we are now holders of the Investors in People Gold Award.

The Constabulary is committed to achieving through its people and delivering a quality service. A significant amount of work has been carried out over the last three years to develop in this area and this award recognises the success of the efforts made.

The IIP process is conducted by an independent assessor who interviews people at all levels across the organisation against an extensive framework supporting a ‘Plan, Do, Review’ model. The assessment tests evidence requirements across a broad spectrum and the Constabulary achieved 177 against the required standard of 165.

The assessor selects the interviewees, comprising just over 10% of the organisation’s total workforce,  and the organisation makes them available.

DC Bobby Syme, who was interviewed as part of the process, said  “Being selected to take part in the Investors in People assessment gave me an opportunity to speak openly and honestly about all aspects of the organisation. In my opinion this can only be of benefit to the Constabulary, its people and the community we serve”.

Jane McCann, who was also interviewed and works within Organisational Development  said “The interview process was very interesting as it felt like a fairly informal chat about where I work, with the assessor. It was great to actually get the chance to talk to the assessor about how things are at work”.

The report recommending the award recognised a range of impactive measures across the Constabulary ranging from all processes being driven around core values, through the input all staff have into processes and development, to the leadership provided across the Organisation.

The IIP review report mentions  :-

•         “Isle of Man Constabulary had a lucid set of values which were accepted by people and ‘lived by’ when carrying out operational duties”
•         “these values played a significant part in affecting the way people worked (i.e. dealing with the public, engaging with partners, community cohesion and through staff being highly motivated and committed to their roles)”
•         “The assessor was impressed by the overall positive ambience at the organisation”
•         “..a highly developed sense of team where people worked together for a common goal”
•         “Clear linkages to a public safety focus ensured…overall performance improvement”
•         “Several unsolicited comments were made about the effective leadership….People indicated they were inspirational, dynamic and very accessible”
•         “transformational leaders were prominent within appropriate roles”
•         “an excellent structured pathway for talent management, development of leaders”
•         “staff…had excellent access to senior management”

Deputy Chief Constable Gary Roberts said “The Constabulary is only as good as its people. And I believe that this prestigious award shows that we are blessed with great people, who are committed to keeping the Isle of Man as safe as it can be.  For some time now we have believed that the significant cultural changes that we have made in recent years have become embedded. This award confirms that view. The fact that we are the first policing body anywhere to win Investors in People gold status is something all of us here are proud of.”

Home Affairs Minister, Hon. Juan Watterson MHK added, “The unique award of IIP Gold Status to the Isle of Man Constabulary is an unparalleled success in the British Isles.  The Island should be proud of its police force, who are committed not only to first class customer service and response to incidents around the Island, but also developing our people and living up to the values that as a community we aspire to: dealing with the public, engaging with partners, community cohesion and through staff being highly motivated and committed to their roles.”
