TT 2012 sees a range of interesting events and exhibitions at the Sayle Gallery in Douglas which will appeal to residents and visitors alike.
Race week at the Sayle kicks off on Mad Sunday (3 June 2012) with the launch of ‘Milestones’ – a TT calendar in which every image is a quirky, surreal take on the history of the various TT milestones and bends. The part-nude, part-bonkers calendar is the brainchild of Rachael Clegg, who comes from good biking stock - her father Noel competed in the TT for 30 years, and her grandfather, Tom Clegg raced in the MGP and Clubman’s TT.
Rachael researched, designed, created and modelled for the images, which were shot by Peter Greste, former BBC foreign correspondent and current the Aljazeera African correspondent – more at home in Mogadishu than on the Mountain Course.
“Milestones took months to prepare, four weeks of 3am starts and several traffic-defying stunts,” says Rachael. “All my life I’ve been submerged in bike-lore from my father, grandfather and brother – who raced in British Superstock and British Superbikes - and the Isle of Man has played a huge part in my family’s life. As a journalist I’ve been reporting on the TT for a number of years and while I’ve had to accept that I lack any racing talent (or indeed basic road sense), I’ve tried to ‘do’ the TT in my own way – fusing my arty background and my anorak interest in TT history.”
“I hope that this calendar will be taken for what it is – an amusing , even classy, take on some of the more intriguing events in the history of the course.”
Milestones will be available for ?14.99 at the Sayle Gallery during TT, along with prints of the images used in the calendar , some of which will be signed by Rachael and the featured riders, many of whom – including John McGuinness and Guy Martin - provided props for the photographs.
Throughout the TT festival, the Sayle Gallery will also be featuring work by Isle of Man artist Paul Parker with a range of bike-related oil paintings, Roland Noble’s watercolours of race scenes around the Island. and photographer Martin Parnell who will be providing up-to-the-minute photos from around the course, especially for TT 2012.
