Tynwald launches new website

by isleofman.com 1st June 2012

Tynwald has launched its new website. More than 25,000 documents are now searchable on the new-look site, www.tynwald.org.im, from the latest committee proceedings to Hansard reports from 1887 to the present day.

Created largely in-house with design support from local company Scorch, the user-friendly site features increased functionality, including a detailed business section that allows a search of all legislative business since 2008 by date, type, member and chamber. Also new to the site are details of all parliamentary committees and reports on their proceedings.

The website, areas of which will continue to be developed (for example to allow for possible future audio-visual coverage of sittings and committee hearings), also features upgraded information for visitors and schools, searchable chapters of the Tynwald Companion, together with RSS feeds, a link to the Tynwald Twitter feed and updated links to other parliaments.

The Speaker of the House of Keys, the Hon Steve Rodan SHK, said: ‘The launch of the new website represents a milestone in the way the Manx parliament is presented to a local and global online audience. The site also demonstrates how Tynwald is embracing advances in technology, such as our world-class Hansard voice recognition system. Now, thanks to the enhanced functionality of the new site, Hansard transcripts of the late 1800s are now as easily searchable as those from the present day.

‘At the heart of parliamentary democracy is transparency. The new Tynwald website supports this by providing ease of access to the fine detail of the business of Manx legislation. It also serves as a valuable tool with which to showcase our unique parliamentary heritage and, in so doing, promote the Isle of Man to the wider world.’
