Wurlitzer Wednesdays are better than ever

by isleofman.com 11th June 2012

This summer’s Wurlitzer Wednesdays will start on 27 June and continue throughout July and August with a free lunchtime concert every Wednesday at 1pm featuring the Mighty Wurlitzer in the Villa Marina Arcade, Douglas.

John Riley gets the season going with a concert featuring Christopher Quayle (cornet) and the St Thomas' School Choir. The retiring collection on this occasion will be for Namaste Children’s Houses Isle of Man, a charity which helps vulnerable and deprived people in Nepal.

The series as a whole features eight Manx resident organists and a wide range of guest artists from the Island's thriving musical community.

New this year is a special Manx-themed event on Wednesday of National Week, 4 July. Also taking centre stage for the first time are Dr Peter Litman (1 August) and John Elliott (15 August), both from Peel.

As usual, admission will be free and there will be a retiring collection for a charity with a Manx connection on every occasion. Series co-ordinator Jonathan King said:

"The tradition of community Wurlitzer concerts in the Arcade started soon after the 2009 restoration and has continued to gain support and popularity with residents and visitors alike. I am grateful to all the musicians who have agreed to give their time and talents free of charge again this year to help make the most of the Wurlitzer on our doorstep. Last year's summer series raised nearly ?1000 for good causes. With more dates and more players there is no reason why we shouldn't do even better this year!"
