What is printmaking? To the Sayle Gallery Artists involved in this themed exhibition, printmaking can be defined as the process of making art works by printing – not a copy but an original, not a reproduction but an impression. Printmaking produces art works with the unique qualities that each printmaking process lends itself to.
Amongst the artists showing work in this exhibition is Eileen Schaer whose lino-prints in editions of 75 are hand printed on Japanese Tosa Shi paper using a traditional Japanese burin consisting of a bamboo leaf stretched and then tied over a circular disc. No mechanical process is used and Eileen prints all of her own work.
Charlotte Jane Henry is well known for her etchings – a traditional method of printmaking, using acid to bite impressions into a metal plate which she then inks and prints from by hand. Each print is numbered as a limited edition and she usually adds watercolour to her pieces. Her subjects depict local landscapes and personal imagery.
For Paul Parker, who is more renowned for his land and seascapes in oils and acrylics, this new work is a step into the unknown: “I see it as a form of drawing, hand-tinted in some cases. I'm sure things will change but let’s see what happens. I sure don't know!”
Other Sayle Gallery Artists with work in the exhibition are Jelena Benson, Bruno Cavellec, and Cas Powles.
