Deputy Mayor loses pounds to raise pounds

by isleofman.com 14th June 2012

Douglas Mayor David Ashford hosted a reception at which Councillor Sara Hackman, the Deputy Mayor, presented cheques to three charities for which she had raised funds by entering the adidas Silverstone half marathon in Northamptonshire and the Isle of Man Bra Dash earlier this year.

The organisations to benefit from her efforts were Graih (?500), The Isle of Man Youth Motor Project (?500) and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, (?200) thanks to her securing generous sponsorship and a level of matched funding from her employers, Hansard Global.

Councillor Hackman was prompted to enter the two events after losing six stones in weight. She said: ‘For my weight-loss regime I wanted there to be something to run for and I had been inspired by the excellent work all three charities were doing. Graih is a small charity providing shelter and support to the homeless, the Youth Motor Project was a cause close to the heart of the late Dot Pitts, a former mayor of Douglas, which helps young people acquire practical skills and Breakthrough Breast Cancer will always need funds to continue its campaigning and research work.’

Councillor Hackman extended her sincere thanks to the Mayor for hosting the reception and to all those who had supported her, including Paul Smart of Hansard Global, John Dimbylow of the Splitlath Redmond motorsport team and Alena Kruntoradova with whom she ran the Bra Dash to finish as joint first females.

The Mayor congratulated Councillor Hackman on her achievements and said he applauded the unfailing generosity of the Manx community that continued to flourish despite difficult economic times.
