IOM Archery Club Report

by isleofman.com 19th June 2012

Sunday saw a handful of archers turn out under leaden skies to compete in a Double Fita 70/50 as part of the club’s handicap league. This involved the archers shooting twin rounds of 72 arrows each at a single distance, 70m for recurve: 50m for compound.

Though overcast, conditions were flat calm. The ladies compound event was a three way contest between Sarah Rigby, Joy Gough and Kirsten George. With Rigby nursing a nagging shoulder problem, Gough returning from injury and young Kirsten George on crutches, courtesy of a school rounders match, scores were unlikely to be up to their usual standards. Ultimately Kirsten found the strain too much; pulling out at the half way stage to leave Sarah and Joy to finish the round, with Sarah taking the honours.

The gentlemen’s compound had only one entrant in the shape of Pete Mumford. After a couple of uncharacteristic misses in the early stages, Mumford settled down to post a personal best score for the round of 1238.

Lone recurve archer Barbara Harris was guaranteed a personal best by virtue of never having attempted the round before. This was just as well since she recorded an inexplicable 28 misses to post a lacklustre score devoid of a single gold.

Three other archers, Billy Lightfoot (compound) and Rob and Karen Lott (recurve) turned up for part of the day to shoot a single round at their respective distances. Billy Lightfoot was out of form and was disappointed with his showing but Rob and Karen both recorded personal bests. Karen increased her pb by 2 points whilst Rob improved his by 76. These scores together with the first round totals of the other archers were adjusted by handicap to give the day’s results.

Two junior archers, Charlotte Harris and Adam Wright were also in action. Charlotte put in a full day to post a stunning personal best for the Metric 3 discipline of 1024.  Joining her for the second half of the shoot Adam posted a score of 523 for the Short Metric 3 adding and amazing 246 points to his personal best for that round.

This week will be a York/Nationals round. Field set up at 9:30 for a 10:30 start.
