A group of 23 legal representatives of the International Union of Lawyers (‘IUL’) from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) visited Malta last week, as part of a weeklong Business Delegation Programme organised by local fiduciary and fund administration services group Abacus.

The delegation, held from 8-15 June, consisted of lawyers from across the CIS, including High Court Judges of the Russian Federation, who attended a series of meetings, including presentations given by the Chief Justice and the Malta Financial Services Authority, and the programme’s organisers, Abacus Corporate Services Limited and Abacus Fund Administration Limited.

Garry Crossan, Chief Executive Officer of Abacus Corporate Services Limited said: “The IUL in the CIS has around 60,000 members. Abacus was approached by the Vice President of IUL and asked to arrange the delegation visit and networking programme; our objective was to provide one which offered significant networking opportunities as well as an informative insight into cross border investment opportunities for CIS companies and High Net Worth individuals”.

Paul Kneen, Managing Director of Abacus’ fund services, attended the delegation on behalf of Abacus’ Isle of Man office. A speaker at the event, Mr Kneen presented the range of services offered by Abacus from their offices in the Isle of Man and Malta. He commented, “We are very pleased that the schedule of events undertaken during this programme provided a networking platform for attending delegates and the organisations involved. It has successfully established a foundation for further collaborations and business opportunities in the future.”

Delegates and participants enjoyed a cocktail party, hosted by Abacus and Nexia BT, to close the week’s programme on the Thursday evening. The event, held at Abacus’ offices in Mriehel, was closed by spokesperson for the IUL delegation, Liudmila Nosova, who in her remarks highlighted the importance of the week’s programme and its role in taking a significant step in fostering dialogue and communication with Malta for the future.
