Motorists asked to take care around School crossing patrols

by isleofman.com 26th June 2012

The Department of Infrastructure’s Road Safety Team would like to remind motorists to take extra care around the Island’s schools.  The Road Safety Team is responsible for the School Crossing Patrol Service.

Regrettably this time last year there were a few incidents where motorists failed to stop when directed to by a School Crossing Patrol Officer, these were reported to the Police.
Gordon Edwards, Road Safety Manager, said: ‘The School Crossing Patrol Officers are a very dedicated and enthusiastic team who play a very important role in keeping the Island’s children safe on their way to and from school. It is an offence to drive through a crossing when signaled to stop, and all motorists who fail to stop will be reported to the Isle of Man Constabulary.’

Incorporated into the Lolly pop stick is a black area which was originally designed  for the Patrol Officer to chalk on the vehicle registration of any vehicle which failed to stop. These days officers are equipped with a note book and pen to record the details of any vehicles which do not comply. There is no excuse as all Lolly Pop men and women wear a high visibility uniform and can clearly be seen.

The Department will be re-running it’s campaign radio adverts over the next few weeks advising all motorist’s that ’ Stop means Stop’.
