Colleagues Defy Floods to Complete Gruelling Olympic Charity Run

by isleofman.com 28th June 2012

Despite flooding and horrendous conditions throughout, an intrepid team of Lloyds TSB colleagues from branches across the Island took part in an Olympic Charity Run last Friday to raise funds for Island based organisation, the Diana Princess of Wales Care at Home Trust. Together, the relay team of ten made their way from the Lloyds TSB Peveril Buildings in Douglas to the Castletown branch, onwards to Peel, from Peel to Ramsey then over the mountain back to Victory House in Douglas where they were congratulated by crowds of supporters. Three of the twelve runners achieved personal bests over their allocated 10km average leg, a tremendous achievement given adverse running conditions which, for some sections over the mountain, saw the runners battle through flash flooding and blinding rain.

Clocking up a total of 89.1kms, the team directly raised the impressive sum of ?1,540 for the charity, a figure which is to be matched by London 2012 Official Presenting Partners, Lloyds TSB, as part of the bank’s ongoing commitment to sustaining the sporting legacy generated by the games. A grand total of over ?3,500 will be donated to the Care at Home Trust, which aims to provide high quality nursing care and support the individual patient, family, friends and carers, when the patient has chosen to remain at home.
Drinks and refreshments were provided upon the arrival of the sodden Lloyds TSB colleagues, who were also given the opportunity to meet and have their photo taken with a selection of London 2012 Olympic Torchbearers, including Mo Sherring and Juan Howland.  Families and friends were encouraged to take part in the celebrations and were also invited to meet the Torchbearers and share in their experiences.

Crossing the finishing line with a personal best after a gruelling 9.5km final leg between the Creg-ny-Baa and Victory House, an elated Jo Wright commented on the event: “Despite the awful, but somewhat familiar, conditions, the race was a great success. The planned route was by no means easy but the team here at Lloyds TSB all did incredibly well, particularly with the support of our friends, family, colleagues and, of course, May, Charlie and Lucy – our support team for the day. I am very proud of everyone here for going to these lengths in aid of such a worthy cause and would like to thank everyone who helped us achieve our fundraising goals.”
