Primary schools have joined forces with Douglas Borough Council and the police in a bid to stop incidences of dog fouling.
St Mary’s RC School, together with Murray’s Road Primary School and Ballaquayle Infants School were invited by the central policing team’s PC Mike Griffiths and the Council’s enforcement team to design a poster that would be used in a leaflet drop to householders in the Somerset Road/Thorny Road area where incidents of dog fouling had been on the increase. The leaflets will be used to encourage greater vigilance and deter owners from committing an offence that attracts a fixed penalty notice and can lead to a court prosecution.
Douglas Mayor Councillor David Ashford held a reception for pupils who submitted the best designs in the competition sponsored by Ellan Vannin Fuels that aims to raise awareness of the antisocial behaviour of allowing dogs to foul the streets. Commended posters were by St Mary’s School’s Abbigail Shaw, 10, Ballaquayle Infants School’s Chloe Imose, six and Murray’s Road Primary School’s Beth Ryan, 10. Overall winner was 11-year-old Alex Moyer from Murray’s Road Primary School.
