Celton Manx to support Relay for Life again in 2012

by isleofman.com 4th July 2012

Celton Manx is once again delighted to be supporting the annual Cancer Research UK Relay for Life, taking place at the Isle of Man National Sports Centre in Douglas, on Saturday 25th August 2012.

The relay was started in 2010 and has grown into a popular fundraising event with over 400 people taking part each year and raising over ?87,000 so far. This year, the event will be officially opened by His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, Mr Adam Wood at a VIP reception for cancer survivors and guests. He will then lead the first lap of the relay with Celton Manx Executive Director Bill Mummery.

Gaynor Haxby, Chair of the Relay Committee said: ‘It is fantastic to once again be welcoming Celton Manx back as the main sponsor for Relay for Life, Isle of Man in 2012.  As last year, their support will cover the main costs of staging the event and means that all the money we raise can go straight to Cancer Research UK to help beat cancer.’

Teams from all over the Island will gather to take part in the 24 hour relay walk around the NSC athletics track.  With the exception of the Candle of Hope Ceremony, teams aim to keep at least one member on the track at all times

At dusk, the Candle of Hope Ceremony takes place where candles are lit and placed inside bags, decorated in dedication to a survivor or a loved one lost to cancer.  Last year, over 400 bags were pledged to those touched by cancer.

Celton Manx Executive Director Bill Mummery said: ‘We are very pleased to be supporting such a worthwhile event again in 2012. I very much enjoyed attending last year’s relay which raised a superb sum of money for Cancer Research UK that directly benefitted the Liverpool Centre for Oncology. I am looking forward to a great event again this year and wish the teams taking part the best of luck in their fundraising.’

Gaynor added: ‘We want as many people as possible to sign-up and fundraise for the event but if you aren’t free all day, why not come along, make a donation and  support the walkers taking part . This year, our media partners, 3FM have teamed up with Energy FM to support Relay so there’ll be plenty of music and entertainment to keep us all going throughout the 24 hours, so come down and join in the fun.’
