Douglas Fire crews called out to investigate smell of burning

by isleofman.com 23rd July 2012

Last Friday, 20th July, Douglas Fire crews were called to a report of a smell of burning within a retail outlet in Dukes Street Douglas.

On arrival the crew carried out a search of the premises to try and establish the cause of the burning smell using a thermal image camera.

Crews discovered that a transformer within some IT distribution equipment had burnt out along with the power supply to a computer, further investigations into the cause also indicated that a light fitting had also burnt out.

With the assistance of the electrician that had been called the smell of burning was traced to an electrical fuse board. When the electrician examined the cables within the fuse board he found that the mains neutral cable had burnt through and melted other cables. The cause of the cable burning was due to the securing screw being loose allowing the cable to heat up.

Crews were on scene for just under 2 hours.

Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Services has released the following Fire Safety Message:

Have all electrics checked periodically by a registered electrician, never overload electrical circuits and remember one socket one plug we do not advise the use of multi plug adaptors.
