Today IOM Government is launching a major consultation regarding the future of the Island’s social policy, which is how the Island as a community cares for those in need.
The Minister for Social Care Hon Chris Robertshaw MHK stated:
“I recently announced that I want the people of the Isle of Man to be involved in a national debate on social policy reform. This is because I believe tackling our social policy is one of the major challenges our community faces.
Much, but not all, of our existing benefits system is shared with the UK. A recent UK Government consultation document notes: ‘Successive governments have ignored the need for fundamental welfare reform, not because they did not think reform was needed but because they thought it too difficult to achieve.’
Add to that the profound changes that are taking place in the balance of our population over the coming years along with the need to rebalance our budget and the conclusion is quickly reached that we can put this off no longer. The Council of Ministers has accordingly stated that this situation must be a key policy priority.
This will be no easy task but I am convinced that, together, it will be possible to arrive at a situation where we can produce a well balanced system which is considered fair, robust, well targeted and affordable by all whilst always protecting the most vulnerable in our society. It will require an open and honest debate, fresh thinking and a new approach but it will be crucial that all parts of our community get involved.
This consultation document is the first step in the process. It sets out the context as to why change is required and seeks your views on principles that will underpin any subsequent changes.
As someone now in my early sixties I feel I have been one of the lucky generation where looking back we have had confident and easy growth for much of my adult working life. It is now time to ensure that the legacy we pass to our children and grand children, in what is now a much more challenging environment, is one that is truly fit for purpose and one in which we can be proud.
So, whether like me, you are one of those who must pass the baton on in due course to those who follow or a younger person who will inherit – please get involved in what is an important debate because the outcome will almost certainly impact upon you and your family in the years ahead.”
