Council wishes cycling stars Olympics success

by isleofman.com 27th July 2012

Council Leader Councillor David Christian JP has extended wishes for Olympics success to cycling world champion Mark Cavendish.

Speaking on behalf of Douglas Borough Council Councillor Christian said: ‘All eyes will be on Mark and fellow Manxman, team pursuit champion Peter Kennaugh, during London 2012. Mark’s success in the final stage of this year’s Tour de France was outstanding and he’s to be congratulated on bringing his tally of stage wins to 23 in this gruelling challenge. The Council was delighted to bestow the honorary Freedom of the Borough on such a world-class sportsman who has not only raised the profile of cycling but also of the Isle of Man through his many wins on the international circuit.

‘Mark takes every opportunity to “fly the flag” for the Island and we, in turn, are proud to return that affection he holds for the land of his birth by showing our support as he and Peter go for gold in London.’
