Douglas Fire Station Open Day on Sunday 19th August

by isleofman.com 30th July 2012
Fresh from their world record breaking exploits in the 24-hour ladder climb, officers from the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service are turning their attention to another major fundraising event.

Douglas Fire Station on Peel Road will be opening its doors to the public from 11am to 4pm on Sunday, August 19, for the biennial Open Day.

The family event, which will feature a host of fire safety demonstrations and fun activities, will raise funds for Manx Cancer Help, the Firefighters Charity and a number of other local charities.

The Open Day was last held in 2010 and proved such a big success that a decision was taken to stage an event at Douglas Fire Station every two years.

One of the highlights of this year’s activities is a 20ft high ‘Slide of Terror’, organised by Sub Officer Roger Brown and members of the line rescue team.

This has been made possible thanks to generous assistance from local firm Red Scaffolding which also supported the Fire and Rescue Service’s 24-hour ladder climb.

Sub Officer Colin Kirkham said: ‘Many firefighters are involved in organising events for the Open Day and we are grateful for the huge support already received from local businesses. We have a fantastic range of raffle prizes, including a super prize of a trip for a car plus two people from the Steam Packet Company.

‘As well as the chance to win prizes, there will be fun for all the family with the opportunity to go up an aerial ladder platform or jump on the bouncy fire engine. There will also be a number of exciting demonstrations throughout the day, including a live chip pan fire and rescue drills using the station’s drill tower, as well as water games involving the hose reels used by firefighters,’ he added.

No parking is available on site, but spaces may be available at the Quarterbridge pub car park and at the National Sports Centre’s overflow parking area, at motorists’ own risk.

Douglas Fire Station Open Day runs from 11am until 4pm and everyone is welcome. Admission is free with donations to the charities gratefully received for the various activities.
