Local rider Cal Cooper impresses in the British 450 championship

by isleofman.com 31st July 2012

Cal Cooper dominated the ninth and tenth rounds of the British 450 motorcycle racing championship at Rockingham International Speedway at Corby, Northants, at the weekend.

The 16 year old Manx Sport Aid-backed rider won three of the four races, a full house of victories just eluding him after a frenetic last lap in the opening race on Saturday in which he ended up third.

Cal, of West Craig, St Jude’s, riding the JDF Racing 450 RRV Aprila, also notched up three wins in the 650 Open class, another maximum slipping away from him when the Italian twin’s clutch expired.

The circuit included a half mile stretch of the banked track that was built to be the home of British NASCAR racing and the new configuration produced some tremendous scraps.

Cal’s winning margins varied between .0341 and a huge 7.212 secs and it looked as if he would come away as the inaugural lap record holder.

However such was the battle in the final encounter that his best was eclipsed by just 0.264, Cal surviving being T-boned as the battle for the win swept up the banking from the infield for the final time.

The championship heads for Anglesey in August and then Cadwell in September before concluding at Mallory in October.

The racing can be seen on Motors TV (Sky 413) on Thursday, August 9 at 10pm and Thursday, August 16 at 8pm.
