Abacus supports Manx Sailing for the Disabled

by isleofman.com 3rd August 2012

Local fiduciary and fund administration services specialist, Abacus, are supporting another local charity this month by donating over ?1,000 to Sailing for the Disabled.

Staff from the local company raised money by holding a Cake and Bake Sale as well as donating through the company’s Staff Charity Salary Deduction Scheme. The total donated was then doubled by the company to make a total sum of ?1,170.35.

Sailing for the Disabled (a Manx registered charity, No. 325) offers adults and children with a wide range of disabilities the chance to enjoy sailing on the charity’s own boat Pride of Mann II. Many of the people assisted have no previous experience of sailing – some have never been in a yacht before. They promote sailing as a sport for any age and any disability, including people in wheelchairs and those with visual and hearing impairments.

Managing Director, Stewart Fleming, said: ‘On behalf of the company and staff at Abacus, I am pleased to be able to present this cheque to such a proactive and worthwhile charity on the Island. Our Corporate Responsibility Committee organises a number of fundraising activities throughout the year in addition to our Charity Salary Deduction Scheme, in order to provide support to local charities and community projects. Staff always show a great deal of interest and support.”

Marion Bolam, spokesperson for Sailing for the Disabled said, “On behalf of the charity I would like to thank Abacus for choosing us as one of their quarterly charities this year. We are always looking to help people with a disability or any debilitating condition such as depression, those in remission from an injury or an illness and who would benefit from a sail on Pride of Mann II. Abacus’ donation will assist us significantly in continuing to do so.”
