Victim Support benefits from Helen’s Parish Walk debut

Jamie Haslett – the 19 year old Manx university student who was knocked down and killed by a car in Sheffield – will be remembered in a tangible way thanks to the efforts in the Parish Walk of 25 year-old Helen Cowin.

Helen, assistant risk manager at RBS International, took part in this year’s event and raised ?1,476 through sponsorship from friends, family and RBS International work colleagues. A cheque for that amount has been presented to Victim Support Isle of Man, the charity that has been a huge support to Jamie’s family. With sponsorship money still coming in the final amount will be well in excess of ?1,500.

Helen, from Douglas, decided to walk in aid of Victim Support as there is a family connection with the Haslett family. Her sister Ashleigh is the girl friend of Jamie’s brother Darryl.

Victim Support is an Isle of Man charity which offers free and confidential help to victims and witnesses of crime, their families and friends, the charity relies upon donations from the general public.

Jamie’s parents, his sister and two brothers were helped through such a difficult time by Victim Support and now channel their efforts to fundraising for the charity in his memory. Having seen how strong the family are, it inspired Helen to do something to help the cause.

Said Helen: ‘I have never done anything like this before – certainly not the Parish Walk - but I decided that if I was going to try and raise money for Victim Support I wanted to do something which would really challenge me and because it was so tough it might persuade more people to sponsor me.

‘I managed to get to Peel, which is 32 miles, and although I really couldn’t have gone any further I felt so elated at what I had achieved and the thought of the money I had raised. My intention is to enter again next year, with Victim Support in mind, and this time I hope to get beyond Peel.’

A cheque presentation took place at the headquarters of RBS International with Helen wearing her race number. She was joined by Jamie Haslett’s parents, Peter and Angela, and by Paula Gelling of Victim Support.

ENDS

Picture caption.
