The Department of Infrastructure have released the following press release:
Following sustained heavy rain the Department has mobilised substantial resources to deal with flooding issues around the Island and on the Mountain.
These include substantial standing water and debris which has washed out onto the roads in places as illustrated by the attached image.
We have closed the Mountain Rd and Lhoobs Rd. Information on their current status can be found on the road watch website and on the Matrix signs. http://www.gov.im/residents/roadnotifications/
On the Mountain we recently carried out drainage improvement work which has prevented a more serious situation. Nonetheless there is significant debris on the road which has been washed onto it by the pressure and volume of water. We are in the process of clearing this as well as protecting the edges of the road.
Some roads have lifted under the action of ground water pressure. These should settle back. We will be monitoring this closely and if the roads do start to break up we will mobilise repair teams.
There is some further rain forecast which should clear later tonight however we believe the worst of the flooding is over.
Please drive carefully, keep your speed down due to the risk of aquaplaning and use headlights and fog lights as appropriate.
To report highway flooding issues please call 686665 or via enquiries@gov.im.
