Young anglers having a whale of a time!

by isleofman.com 17th August 2012

Nationwide International is continuing its support in the community with sponsorship of the Mannin Angling Club junior section, based in Port St Mary.

Close to 40 young anglers, as young as 4 years old, take part in the regular fishing competitions organised by the club each Thursday on the Alfred Pier, catching a wide range of fish.

They regularly catch a big variety species of fish, including wrasse, callig, coalfish and Scorpion fish, and this year alone they are up to 15 different species of fish, caught from the pier.

The continuing Nationwide International sponsorship means that the regular weekly competitions can continue each week, with awards and certificates for the young anglers.

“It really is very much appreciated,” said Tony Palmer, organiser of the weekly junior events. “We are 100% focused on catch-and-release fishing, conservation, and the education of our juniors and the environment in which we live.

“Our weekly junior competitions are a vital part of that education and the club prides itself on educating the young anglers by teaching them how to identify the fish, handle them safely and to release what they catch.”

Mannin Angling Club is one of the longest established fishing organisations in the Isle of Man and held its 61st annual Fishing Festival in late July, attracting visitors from  all over the UK, Ireland and Wales each year.

The club’s senior section has more than 50 active local members, in addition to the junior anglers, and has a unique kayak fishing section with over 30 active members.

Seamus Byrne of Nationwide International added, “Mannin Angling Club is doing a great job in educating young children on the environment, conservation and sustainability of fishing in Manx waters, whilst also helping them - including many girls - to enjoy the experience at the same time.

“We are very keen to support the club’s focus on angling and conservation in a supervised, safe, friendly, and welcoming environment.”
