A student from Ballakermeen High School has received an award for her leadership skills.
Tegan Dixon was given an alumni leadership award at the Junior Achievement-Young Enterprise Company of the Year competition in Bucharest in July. She was there representing the Isle of Man together with her teammates from Ballakermeen High School who won the Junior Achievement Company of the Year competition held in March.
The 17-year-old was one of 16 students selected for their leadership skills and will be taking part in a ‘Leaders for a Day’ programme in Brussels this October. She said: ‘I was really shocked to have been chosen. I didn’t realise I was being considered for the award as the panel who made their nominations did so “under cover” during interview sessions with around 30 students. To win this award means you have an amazing opportunity to shadow top business CEOs for a day.’
When asked what qualities she believed the judging panel saw in her she replied: ‘I think it’s because I’m pretty outspoken and in the interview sessions I tended to lead. Similarly when I was in the Company of the Year competition I was production co-ordinator and to ensure quality control I demanded a lot of myself, so I demanded a lot of my teammates as well.
‘The trip to Bucharest was amazing. We met people from all over Europe, spent time talking about business, and discussing different cultures.
‘Junior Achievement is great because it brings out qualities and skills that you may otherwise not have the opportunity to develop and I’m hoping to apply some of those skills when I go on to study psychology and marketing.’
