Mooragh Vintage Model Yacht Rally at Ramsey’s Mooragh Lake

by isleofman.com 23rd August 2012

The Manx Model Boat Club intends to hold a model yacht rally at the Mooragh Park on Sunday 2nd September. It is many years since similar events were held here in the heyday of Ramsey Model Yacht Club but many boats of that era still exist but have lain dormant in attics and sheds.

Model yachts have moved on since then and have a completely different design and are radio controlled. The event is being organised with a combination of both and to give adults and children alike the opportunity to see these historical boats and to ‘have a go’ with both the vintage and the modern boats. The boats will be assembled and on display under the ‘bandstand’ during the afternoon with sailing on the nearby area of water. ‘Rescue services will be available!

The afternoon will be in a combined format starting at 2.30pm with a race for modern boats, followed by free-sailing of both vintage and radio controlled boats when the public are invited to participate, and indeed bring any yacht they may have for some fun and interest. There will be a second race for radio-controlled yachts at approximately 4.00pm followed by afternoon tea for those who wish to indulge in the Park cafe, unfortunately at your own expense.

Ramsey Town Commissioners have granted permission for this event on the Lake, for which we gratefully thank them, and they will ensure the lake is full. Permission has been granted for participants with yachts to park in the nearby car park providing they have a special one day permit, contact Brian King on 628156 for an application form and further information regarding the rally.
