The Isle of Man United Nations Association (UNAIOM) will be holding its annual UN Day lecture at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre on Wednesday 24th October at 7pm, preceded by a reception at 6pm.
This year’s speaker is Island-educated and resident Tim Cullen, Executive Director of the Small Countries Financial Management Centre, and a Commissioner for the Island’s Financial Supervision Commission, who will speak about international co-operation.
For most of the 1990s, Mr Cullen was Chief spokesman of the World Bank, a global co-operative of 188 member countries, and a specialised agency of the United Nations. He has long been an advocate of multilateralism - the concept of a group of countries working together for the common good, as typified by the UN and its agencies.
He played a key role in the public positioning of the UN agencies at the Earth Summit (UNCED) in Rio 20 years ago, in the multilateral drive to rebuild Bosnia after the Dayton peace accords, and in negotiations to raise billions of dollars from 35 nations for the World Bank to lend to the world's poorest countries. Mr Cullen will talk about these and other multilateral initiatives in which he has been personally involved, and will argue that nations with less individual power have a voice in multilateral bodies to balance and temper the dominance in global decision-making of the super powers.
UNA Chairman, William Cain QC CBE, said: “With Mr Cullen’s background in development & economic reform, business ethics, negotiation, and World Bank affairs, I am sure his talk will be fascinating.”
The net proceeds of the event (including donations) are being awarded to the Isle of Man’s One World Centre.
This event is open to both members and non-members of the UNAIOM. Tickets for non-members cost ?10 and can be obtained from TW Cain, Ivie Cottage, Kirk Michael IM6 1AU. Please make cheques payable to UNA of IOM. For any enquiries regarding tickets, you can also ring the One World Centre on 800464.
