Ship Registry recognised by prestigious organisation in South Korea

by isleofman.com 2nd October 2012

The Isle of Man Ship Registry has been recognised by the Korean Register of Shipping (KR) for its efforts to engage more closely with Asia.  Mr Joosung Park, who is based in the Korean Register’s London office, visited the Island on Tuesday 25th September to present a gold ‘plaque of appreciation’ to Dick Welsh, the Ship Registry’s Director, from KR’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mr Oh Kong-Gyun.

KR is a leading international ship classification society, promoting safe ships and clean oceans by continually developing shipping technology, shipbuilding and other industrial services, as well as developing staff that work in the industry.  The Korean Registry celebrates its foundation day on June 20th and on each anniversary honours individuals for their contribution to the development of the organisation.

Dick Welsh, Director of Isle of Man Ship Registry, said:

‘The Isle of Man Ship Registry has been building relationships with owners in Asia for many years now as we recognise the growth and importance of the Asian merchant fleet.  It is an honour for the Isle of Man Ship Registry to receive this tremendous accolade and it is particularly pleasing that this recognition has come from such a prestigious organisation in South Korea.’

Alex Downie, OBE, MLC, said:

‘This is great news for the Ship Registry and it reinforces the high status that the Island now enjoys with Asia.  We strive to offer the highest levels of customer service and the Award highlights the excellent service provided and hard work shown by our team, as well as its innovative ideas in promoting the Isle of Man to new markets.’
