Bus drivers have concluded a second ballot on proposed changes to their terms and conditions, with the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure’s preferred option being put to drivers but rejected. The ballot was conducted through the Industrial Relations Office on Monday 1st October 2012.
 
Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure, Hon G Cregeen MHK said: ‘I am disappointed that bus drivers have rejected the proposed new terms and conditions. We have worked hard with the union to minimise the personal impact on the drivers whilst delivering the savings targets the Department has to achieve. These targets must be met and every economy must be made within our operations. We will discuss the how best to move forward from here but the need to achieve the savings remains as pressing as ever.’
 
Under the proposal, drivers would have no longer been paid for their lunch break. Sick pay would have reduced to come into line with a 37 hour week and maximum driving time would have increased from 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours and 10 minutes.
 
The Minister added: ‘The Department is operating a vital public service in a challenging commercial environment. Budgets are reduced and fuel costs are rising. Not only must we provide the best service possible to our customers, we have to do so within our means and deliver value to the taxpayer. New terms and conditions for bus drivers are a big step towards achieving this objective.’
