Reward offered after cars damaged in South of Island

by isleofman.com 8th October 2012
Police are continuing to investigate the damage to numerous vehicles which have been damaged between late afternoon and late evening on Sunday 7th October 2012.  Further enquiries have revealed that in excess of 60 cars have had one of two corrosive liquids sprayed onto them from what is believed to be from a moving vehicle, those liquids being a creamy colour and the other a green colour both of which are unidentified but both liquids have caused extensive damage to the paint work of the vehicles.

Sergeant Gary Heaton of The Southern Neighbourhood Policing Team Police said:-

“Whilst we occasionally receive reports of damage to vehicles, damage on a large scale such as this is unprecedented on the Isle of Man. It has caused much distress to the owners of the cars and in some cases more than one panel has been damaged, this of course affects us all in the rise of insurance costs and if just one panel on a vehicle was damaged at a repair cost of ?800 given all the cars damaged it would total ?48,000. As such thousands of pounds will need to be spent on repairs to these vehicles some of which are expensive cars such as; BMW’S and Audi’s. It is apparent that the offenders have had no regard for the impact this will have on the victims not only financially but the inconvenience of contacting insurance companies, car body repairers and finding alternative methods of transport whilst their vehicles are off the road.

The Police have taken an unusual step of speaking with Crimestoppers which is independent of the Police and due to the serious nature of the crime; Crimestoppers will offer a reward of up to ?1000 leading to the arrest and conviction of offenders involved in the incident.

Due to the unusual nature of this incident I feel that the persons responsible will have talked about what they have done and would urge anyone who may have sold the substances unknowingly to contact the Police to assist with the enquiry or anyone with any information to call any police station or call crime stoppers on 0800 555 111.”

If you have any information regarding this senseless act then please contact Port Erin Police Station on 832222 or alternatively contact the anonymous Crimestoppers Line on 0800 555 111.
