Prepare for More Bad Weather!

by isleofman.com 12th October 2012

Following this weeks unexpected bad weather and widespread flooding, local insurance broker, Bryan O’Connor of IFS Ltd has warned that more bad weather could be on its way so now is the time to get prepared.

Your first priority must be to keep yourself safe.

Make sure that you put emergency contact numbers for your insurance company or broker, local authority and utility companies in a safe, easily accessible and waterproof place.

Listen out for weather warnings on local radio and Facebook is also a good source of information as people will post their own pictures and updates of where conditions are bad.

Assemble a flood kit containing:

• A spare mobile phone charger
• Contact telephone numbers
• Torch
• Batteries
• Radio
• Insurance policy details
• Essential first aid supplies

If your home or contents have been damaged by flooding:

• Contact your insurance company or broker as soon as possible. Most will have 24 hour emergency helplines which can give information on next steps and arranging repairs;
• If necessary, arrange emergency repairs to stop any damage getting worse. Tell your insurer and keep any receipts as this will form part of your claim;
• Don’t be in a rush to throw away damaged items unless they are a danger to health as these may be able to be repaired or restored. Your insurance broker or insurance company will advise you about what to do.

If you have to leave your home:

• Consider what valuables and essential items you may be able to take with you;
• Lock the doors and windows if possible;
• Inform family and neighbours of your plans and how to contact you;
• Take emergency contact details with you including mobile phone numbers and email addresses if possible. Your insurer will need this information so they can keep in contact with you;
• Only return to your home after a flood when it is safe to do so.
