Albany Tennis Club News

by isleofman.com 16th October 2012

At last Friday’s IOMLTA Dinner & Prize Presentation held at Douglas Golf Club, there was an additional award for the club when it was announced that Albany LTC was the 946th tennis club to achieve LTA Club Mark standard. Plaques were presented to Club President, Bryan Sharp assisted by one of our youngest players, Sam Skelcher-Maxwell by Paul Jarvis on behalf of the the LTA. The LTA Club Mark is part of the original scheme launched by Sport England in 2002. To achieve this standard the club has to show that it adheres to the LTA’s  criteria, such as fair & transparent operational processes, promote safety and well being for all children and adults, deliver a comprehensive and inclusive programme for all ages and abilities and have a clear plan for long term sustainability and future growth. Players from our league teams were on hand to accept trophies and medals for winning the ladies division one and two, plus mixed division three and four. (sending group photo)

The Coffee Morning held at the club last Friday as part of the Macmillan Cancer Support World’s Biggest Coffee Morning raised ?120. The event was co-ordinated by Linda Donald and hosted by Bridget Stewart and Jan Gaskill. They would like to thank everyone for their support.

This is my final reminder that next tournament at the club is the Autumn Half-Term OPEN Junior from Wednesday October 31 to Saturday November 3 and sponsored by PPP. Closing date is October 24anyone wishing to enter can do so on line or by collecting an entry form from the clubhouse. Any queries contact Sally Walker (201310) or Ian Watson (496293). Times for the Mini events are Green ball 12pm Friday November 2, Red ball Saturday – beginners 12–2pm and Red group improvers 2–4pm. All yellow ball events start from 31st. There is also Men’s and Ladies singles events. This is an OPEN event and it would be nice to welcome players from other clubs to this tournament.

As you know the club hosts the Children of Chernobyl each year for tennis and lunch and we all admire the work done by Norman & Joan Rivers and their supporters. I would like to think that all our members would sign the epetition to the UK Government in protest to the plan to charge ?90 visa tax from January 2013 for every child travelling to the UK and onwards. It already costs FOCC around ?500 for each child per trip and this added cost could mean that less children will come next year. Please sign http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/37945.
