Barclays supporting Disability Sport

by isleofman.com 16th October 2012

For the third consecutive year, Barclays is supporting the development of disability sport in the Isle of Man.  In conjunction with the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure’s Sports Development Unit, Barclays is helping to develop and increase the number of sporting opportunities and sporting provision made available to all children with disabilities on island

Zoe Carney, the Disability Sports Development Officer said: ‘Physical activity can improve children’s self esteem, confidence and social interaction. Taking part in extra sport and recreation like these weekly sport sessions can enhance their well being, improve learning skills and develop coordination and movement control.’

Through the ongoing work of the Disability Sports Development Officer and from the generous donation from Barclays, the Disability School Sports Programme (DSSP) is successfully secured for another school year.

This allows children in special education need units (SEN Units) across the Island to participate in a variety of sport sessions and sporting festivals. Sports included in the DSSP include football, athletics, gymnastics and kwik cricket. These weekly sessions are facilitated by the disability sports development officer in partnership with national governing bodies and qualified Manx Sport and Recreation coaches.

The disability school sports programme is a great way to improve the quantity and quality of physical activity and sport within schools. All initiatives help to develop and enhance the inclusion of individuals with disabilities taking part in physical activity.

There are a total of 9 Primary SEN Units and 5 Secondary SEN Units on the Island totalling to over 170 children with disabilities.
