Dr Frank Vaughan has been appointed as Medical Advisor to Team Isle of Man at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. He was appointed to the role by the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association, the organisation responsible for the publicity, fundraising, travel and support for the participation of the Island’s national team at the Games. It is a registered charity and relies upon fundraising events and donations to fund Team Isle of Man’s participation.
Dr Vaughan is a registered GP with a strong interest in sports medicine. He is a member of the British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine and is based at the Snaefell Surgery in Anagh Coar, Douglas. As well as his role during the Games in two years time, Dr Vaughan will also treat and advise competitors on the Glasgow 2014 Support Programme which is run by the Isle of Man Sport Institute and allows individuals chosen by the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association to receive expert advice and support. In the build-up to Glasgow 2014 seven talented sports people have been selected for the programme to help them achieve their ambition of representing the Isle of Man at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The support provided by the Sport Institute to the selected competitors is funded by the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association. Commenting on his appointment as Medical Advisor, Dr Vaughan said:
“It’s a great honour to be appointed again as Medical Advisor and I’m looking forward to supporting all Team Isle of Man competitors at the Games and in the build up to the Games in the next two years.”
Dr Vaughan is Medical Officer at the Isle of Man Sport Institute and has been a key figure within the Institute since it was founded in 2006. He was Team Isle of Man’s Medical Advisor for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the 2007 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, and was also involved in the build up to the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. In addition, Dr Vaughan was Chief Medical Officer for the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man. Other significant roles he holds within sports medicine include Medical Officer for the Isle of Man’s Island Games team and area doctor for the Lawn Tennis Association. Dr Vaughan’s career in General Practice began in 1990 while he was serving in the Royal Air Force. He treated many sports competitors in the RAF and set up sports clinics at several RAF stations. He is also a qualified acupuncturist and clinical hypnotherapist.
Other recent Glasgow 2014 appointments announced by the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association include Tonia Lushington, who will be the Chef de Mission for Team Isle of Man, and Trevor Taubman, who will be the team’s General Manager. The Isle of Man will be one of 70 nations competing in Glasgow between July 23 and August 3, 2014. The 11 days of competition covers 17 sports; 10 of which are core sports played at every Games and seven selected by the host city. Preparations for Glasgow 2014 are well under way with the host city currently undergoing major infrastructure work including a new sports arena which will be one of the largest of its type in Europe and an athletes’ village capable of housing up to 6,500 visitors.
