IoM Archery Club Report

by isleofman.com 14th November 2012

The IoM Archery Club met at the weekend to shoot a Portsmouth round as part of the Club’s Scratch League. Fortunes varied, with some shooting well below par, but five archers recorded personal best scores and sixth equalled his.

The contest for top spot in the Men’s Compound division was a close run one between Dave Moore and Pete Mumford. They were all square at the end of the first dozen. Mumford then edged a one point lead at the end of the second. Moore reversed the position at the end of the third dozen and had stretched this to a three point lead going into the last dozen. Moore finished with a personal best score of 576. Pete Mumford however, once again demonstrated his enviable ability to maintain focus until the last arrow recorded a score of 577 to take the top spot by one point. Colin Moore equalled his best score of 555 to take third place ahead of Frank Vaughan who p.b.’d on 552.

The Women’s Compound match was also closely fought but Aalin George just managed to edge out Sarah Rigby. Joy Gough, shooting for only the second time this season after protracted physiotherapy for a shoulder injury, did well until the second half of the fourth dozen. At this point she recorded an uncharacteristic miss which put a dent in an otherwise encouraging score sheet.

The Men’s Recurve saw the largest field of the day with six archers vying for the podium. In the end it was the experienced Tony Hartley who took the win from Matt Smith who p.b.’d on 551, with Rhys Moore picking up third place. Newcomer Kerry Boland added 77 to his personal best score to finish on 447.

In the junior division, Charlotte Harris posted a personal best score of 493 but this was not quite enough to take top spot from Adam Wright who shot 495. Bradley Layton was disappointed with his score of 489.

The Women’s Recurve involved the familiar face off between Karen Lott and Barbara Harris. Harris, who has recently received coaching from UK ranked No 2 Junior archer Kirsten George, recorded a personal best score of 555 to take the win. Lott recorded 517, just a few points below her personal best for the round.
