Dog Fouling Awareness Campaign: A colourful subject?

by isleofman.com 30th November 2012

On Monday 3rd December Braddan Parish Commissioners will be embarking on a four week “stop dog fouling” campaign in the Parish.

Posters will be displayed around the Parish advising people of the campaign and explaining that it is an offence, under the Dog Byelaws 2009 and the Dogs Act 1990, to neglect to clear up after their dogs, and that offenders could receive an on the spot fine of ?50.00 or, on summary conviction,  a fine not exceeding ?1000.00.

The Commissioners are concerned that one of the worst areas in the Parish at the moment is the Marine Drive and yet there are 14 litter or dog bins within that 3 mile stretch of road.

The Commissioners have selected 4 specific posters which set out a clear message in relation to  the offences and outcomes which may be experienced by irresponsible dog owners, and these posters can be seen on the Authority’s website www.braddan.gov.im.

The messages on the four posters have been taken from other successful campaigns and from various sources such as: Community Hygiene Concern (CHC), Dog - Bags.co.uk, National Blind Children's Society (NBCS) and the UK NHS websites.

The Commissioners will step up warden patrols in the worst affected areas in the Parish and if the enforcement officer finds any dog owners neglecting their responsibility to clean up after their dogs a fixed penalty will be issued.

To highlight the problem and to raise awareness, any dog faeces which have been left on the pavements, roads and verges will be sprayed in luminous colours and left for a week before being cleared up.

This exercise will have a dual purpose as it will aid pedestrians awareness of where the faeces are located and hopefully prevent them from stepping in the mess.

The process will be monitored and information reported back to the Commissioners to detail the extent of the problem at the start of the campaign and whether in fact it has been successful at its completion.

The Commissioners wish to make it clear that even when the campaign has been completed action will be taken against irresponsible owners that do not clear the pavements, roads and verges after their dogs have fouled.
