The Annual General Meeting was held on Monday. In his report, chairman, Stuart Colligon, thanked the committee and coaching staff for all their efforts and time they give to Albany. Last year he estimated if all roles were carried out by professionals it would cost the club approximately ?20–?23,000! This year on a similar theme but from a member’s point of view, a similar figure would add ?200 to a senior membership fee! That was food for thought. Albany’s committee and members have a lot more to do than other clubs as they own the land and buildings which all need regular maintenance.
He paid tribute to the Friday Morning Ladies who continue to thrive, especially when welcoming new members and supporting and funding events. Membership is similar to last year but there is a fall off in male members. This is surprising as the club’s indoor court, which in previous years the men complained they couldn’t book because the women had all the best slots, is currently under utilised. Are we up against a Pay & Play culture and how do we change it?
The coaching programme is strong with squads taking place throughout the week and at weekends. Many of the initial Red Ball players are progressing to Orange, Green and the full game. The club’s financial position is stable but there are schemes that could be looked at if income increased. Currently some members are raising money for a project to insulate the indoor court. Any members with fund raising ideas they would help to run, let me know - e-mail ballabreck@manx.net. There is the alternative for members to make a donation or find banner, team or court sponsors. The committee will discuss any of these ideas.
Treasurer Ashley Sandyford-Sykes and his wife, Shelby, Social Secretary were thanked by the chairman for all the time they had given to their roles but due to personal pressures had to step down.
Also not seeking re-election,Tracy Simmons (Minute Secretary) was thanked for her efforts. Officers elected: President Bryan Sharp, Chairman Stuart Colligon, Secretary/PRO Mrs Pat Sharp, Treasurer David Winnell, Membership Secretary Mrs Jan Gaskill, Men’s Captain Ian Watson, Club Facilities Manager Bryan Sharp, Tournament Convenor Mrs Sally Walker, Child Protection Officer Ms Clare Skelcher. and Minute Secretary Mrs Jackie Russell. All the current V Presidents will be invited to continue and their support is appreciated. Mrs Val Worth and Mrs Fran Shacklock were elected as new Vice Presidents.
The WK Dale Cup was presented to Jan Gaskill and the new Sharp Trophy, won by Val Worth & Harry Walters in the Senior/Junior competition, for which it will be competed for each year, was accepted by Val on behalf of her and Harry. The club will stage the IOMLTA Senior Championships for 2013. This will be June 15 – 23 which will give the Island Games team valuable match practice. Dates for all other club events will be announced shortly.
Don't forget, the Christmas Car Boot/Table Top Sale on Saturday 8 December 1–4pm. The December Mini competition will also be taking place. The idea is that all the parents and children will “Come and Buy” before or after their matches. We need 3 or 4 helpers to sell raffle tickets – there are some very good prizes - or serve refreshments. Please contact me if you can help.
