From Russia - with love?

by isleofman.com 4th December 2012

The find of a mystery foreign tube of aftershave lotion on a beach in Port St Mary has been solved by a Russian-born Manx resident.

The discovery, made by volunteers cleaning Perwick Bay on Sunday as part of a Beach Buddies beach clean, was amongst more than 30 bags of rubbish which had accumulated on the beach during this year.

Initially, volunteers thought it was Greek, but the origin of the lotion was solved via the Beach Buddies’ Facebook pages when local resident, Russian-born Svetlana Cameron, translated the words on the tube.

She said, "As a native Russian speaker, I officially confirm that it is Russian and it is aftershave lotion, with camomile extract for sensitive skin. And I am very ashamed of whoever threw this out on the beach instead of a bin!"

How the tube of aftershave eventually found its way onto the beach at Perwick Bay remains something of a mystery, but Beach Buddies believe it is most likely to have been washed overboard from one of the many large Russian fishing vessels which operate in the Irish Sea.

“We find all sorts of unusual items,” said Beach Buddies founder Bill Dale, “but this is a rare find. I can’t see how it could have come here all the way from Russia, so it’s only logical to assume it came from a Russian trawler. But you never know..."
