The 2013 One World Charity Challenge is set to be the most hotly contested yet with a record number of entries received from schools around the Island.
The Challenge invites Year 12 students to speak out for people living in the developing world by creating a presentation examining the work of a particular charity.
Over 140 students in 28 teams have signed up to take part in the 2013 project. This means that 28 different charities working overseas - half of which are registered on the Island, with the others receiving funding from the Overseas Aid Committee - will be represented.
The students must put together a 12 minute multi-media presentation which examines the effectiveness of their chosen charity, shows cultural understanding and looks at the impact the charity has had on the life of a young person. One team from each school will be selected to take part in the final at the Manx Museum on 11th March 2013.
The One World Charity Challenge is sponsored by the H&S Davidson Trust and co-ordinated by the One World Centre, Isle of Man. The H&S Davidson Trust offers a grant for each team completing the Challenge and this is pooled into a prize fund which is shared between the five charities represented in the final.
As in previous years, the Overseas Aid Committee will provide match funding so that the charities represented by the teams will receive an award of several hundred pounds based on the merits of the student presentations.
One World Director Rosemary Clarke says, “I’m really pleased with this fantastic response which shows how young people are becoming more aware of global issues and want to be able to make a positive contribution.”
Since 2008 over £60,000 has been donated to charities working overseas as a direct result of this project.
