Ellan Vannin memorial today

Relatives of some of those who died in the Ellan Vannin tragedy 103 years ago today are expected to join a memorial at the quayside in Ramsey this evening.

Thirty-five people lost their lives on December 3, 1909, when the Steam Packet vessel which had set off from the northern port, sank in the Mersey in heavy storms.

The names of those who died will be read out at a service at Our Lady Star of the Sea, due to be attended by Chief Minister Allan Bell and fellow ramsey MHK Leonard Singer as well as representatives from the Packet.

The event's been organised this year by local charity Manx Aid which will make a presentation to the man who founded the annual memorial from the 100th anniversary, Harry Edmondson.

Harry says interest has never waned and he's delighted members of the public and those with connections to Ellan Vannin have shown such interest:
