Jenny Holt granted leave to appeal

by isleofman.com 29th November 2012

An Island advocate convicted of money laundering has been granted leave to appeal against her conviction.

Jenny Holt of Union Mills last year received a 12-month sentence, suspended for two years, after being found guilty by a jury of handling ?400,000 stolen from a trust fund by tycoon Trevor Baines and his wife Wendy.

However, after an initial bid to overturn her conviction was unsuccessful, she has now been granted leave to appeal.

It’s very rare for a criminal case in the Isle of Man to end up in the Privy Council. The last one was back in the late 1980s.

Miss Holt has always maintained her innocence and the application required her legal team to satisfy the appeal panel that a risk of substantial miscarriage of justice may have occurred.

The appeal will be heard in due course in London.

In the meantime Miss Holt is voluntarily not practising as an advocate and proceedings before the Advocates Disciplinary Tribunal brought by the Isle of Man Law Society have been stayed pending the appeal.

Miss Holt is thanking those who have supported her to date.
